Reflection on the Gallery Show
At the bottom of this page is the list of principles for INTASC.  I would like to take this moment to link my artwork from the gallery show to some of these principles.  For example, Principle 1 states that The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.   The body of work that I presented demonstrates my ability in the studio skill acrylic painting.  I built and stretched the larger canvases and I mixed the colors of paint that I used.  Under each work I described the meaning and concepts associated with each image.  Acrylic paint is a very versital matieral.  It is flat, but can be glossy; its opaque, but can be transparent; and it is durable yet  easy to clean up.   Since it is a new material it is perceived as not as valuable as oil or watercolor.  I believe that abstract art is art for artists.  I like abstract art because I can create images based on concepts or ideas.  Abstract art gives you the freedom to bend reality to suite your needs.  Students of all ages can appreciate being able to interpret and skew reality to create abstract art with meaning.  (All art is abstracted from reality by the artist.)
My artwork relates to my philosophies by improving and bringing deeper meaning to my life.  I transfer my feelings into a physical painting and have to think about how to represent these ideas.  I have developed symbols and assigned meanings to them.  For instance, the brushwork and green color on My Heart became a symbol of my heart and was repeated in The Opening of My Heart.  After the work is finished I can look back and create another level of meaning  about the concepts I was representing.  I think that the my paintings express my individual feelings and in turn emphasize humanity.  This is an important concept that I want to stress to my students.  Out of respect for the individuals ideas in art we can see our unity as human beings and becoming more humane.
